Our Victory Garden Soil is a blend of compost, mineral soil, biochar, and rock dust for filling raised beds. It is only a base. With care and time, it will eventually become a thriving, living soil. The first year will not be the best. The microbes takes time to get established.
When you get your soil home it will be very dry. Fill your beds and then add a lot of water over several days. Dig down into the soil and make sure the water has seeped all the way to the bottom.
Consider adding something to get the biology going. The beneficial microbes will come with time, but there are a few things you can add to speed it up:
Compost extract or compost tea with added molasses to provide energy for microbes.
Worms, vermicast (worm poo), or vermicast tea
Soil from your best performing garden beds, or landscape areas.
Compost from your home compost pile (the oldest, darkest stuff you can find).
Wool pellets, crab meal, feather meal, alfalfa meal (to stimulate diverse microbes).
Liquid fish and kelp as a foliar spray and root dip.
Mulch, mulch, mulch!
Add mulch during the growing season, and in the fall. Use leaves, wool, wood chips, alfalfa hay, grass clippings, etc. This will continue to feed your soil over time.
