Soil Testing

Are you curious about the chemistry of your soil, or wondering why some crops are struggling? It might be time for a soil test.
There are three areas of soil function - biology, chemistry, and physics. A basic laboratory soil test typically looks at only the chemistry. This is certainly useful, but keep in mind it is only one part of the big picture.
For Wyoming soils, we recommend testing for the following:
Organic matter
Soluble salts (measured as EC)
pH
Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR)
Macro and micro mineral nutrients
It is very important that the lab you work with is familiar with calcareous soils and uses the Olsen (sodium bicarbonate) test for phosphorus.
The University of Wyoming does not have a soils lab. However, Colorado State University does provide soil testing for gardens and farms.
Interpreting soil tests is highly context dependent. Your local UW Extension or Conservation District Staff are also good resources and may even have soil testing tools available to borrow.
