Biochar is a source of stable carbon with a rapid and direct affect on soil function. It will last in the soil for centuries and work to improve the water and nutrient holding capacity of soil.

Biochar is also a great tool for the remediation of salt or herbicide affected soils, and has uses in animal health.

Add biochar to the soil at a rate of 5-10% by volume. Like all carbon-based amendments, it is best to add biochar to the soil in the fall.

When used to improve soil health and function biochar must first be "primed" with nutrients and/or biology before adding it to the soil. This can be done with fish hydrolysate, compost extract, vermicast, compost, etc.

Make a slurry with the biochar and the product you will using to add nutrients and biology. Let this sit for a few days before using in your garden or landscapes.

When using biochar to remediate saline or contaminated soils, do not prime it. This will allow it to adsorb more salts or herbicide molecules from the soil.
